Busy, Busy

It's been a while since I've posted, busy with the shop and the "Home To Roost" exhibit.  Opening night went really well and just the other morning CBC radio hosted their live Information Morning show from inside the exhibit at the Centre for Craft and Design.  The Bird Show was on first , very early, and they were a natural fit surrounded by all our creatures in the exhibit. Then Steve Sutherland who hosts Information Morning had fun for a couple of hours learning how to hook. throw pots and in between interviewing all six of the artists in Home To Roost. Each of the interviews went great, fun and entertaining.


Yesterday I was interviewed for the local paper the Cape Breton Post. I'm having my Grand Opening this Saturday and they did a short interview with photo to promote the upcoming event. :)

arrange barter system with awesome baker friend, oatcakes for fabric.........check
twist arms of two other friends to come for the day and either help me control the throngs or sit and gorge on oatcakes all day.......check
clean.....ugh.......still time tomorrow........

"Home To Roost" Opening Night

  Opening night of "Home To Roost" was a huge success! We had big crowds, served lots of wine and munchies and received wonderful reviews from everyone that came. :D

Below are some photos of the different artists work. I picked a couple from each, which was hard, there was so much more than I can show here, and all of it amazing!

                        These are a couple of my Peacock with it's majestic tail and check out the wonderful                       perch that Shari MacLeod wove for him.

A few wallhangings that I used different mixed media techniques on. 

I am really pleased how my family came out. One of the funnest parts was hand printing bird sayings on twill tape and weaving them through the nest. There is also some  text attached to each bird , I'm sorry I didn't take closer shots, maybe I'll catch up with that later.

And of course the Jewel Birds flocking together.

These pieces are from Sarah Beck. You can see from the red dot her work doesn't hang around long. She achieves the most wonderful color and texture with her work in clay.

These two pieces are by Katherine Scott. She works in paper and does amazing things. The above book was a collection of photos of friends that she attached wings to and a short verse written by the person expressing what they would do if they had wings. 

The piece below was massive , must have been close to 12 feet long! 

The felting here and all the basket work was done by Shari MacLeod. Her felted creatures are a wonder, full of character. Shari was the ring leader of the show and we were all thrilled to be invited along for the ride. 

These pieces are from Teena Marie Fancy. She works in mixed media and is an amazing painter. The weaving here is done by Shari again. 

The tree below was full of these bird portraits and one was as amazing as the next. 

All the beautiful wire wrapped jewelry was done by Gayle Bird. She did a running theme of peacock feathers through her pieces and they were being snapped up by customers faster than you can blink. 

A couple of snaps of people roaming around at the start of the show and then I put my camera away and enjoyed the show.

Carol Beaton, the director of the Centre for Craft and Design said it was the largest turn out they had had for a show in their gallery. "Home To Roost will run till the end of May and hopefully continue to draw a crowd.

I made these Jewel Birds for the "Home To Roost" exhibit.

                      The opening night of the exhibit will be tomorrow night with a lovely wine reception.

Home To Roost

It's been a crazy busy couple of weeks here in my new studio. The basic move in is done but I haven't played with my work areas much because I've been busy with an upcoming exhibit that I am in with a group of fellow artists.

It's called "Home To Roost" and it will be up for the months of April and May in the Centre for Craft and Design Gallery. 

There are 6 of us in the group, Shari Macleod who is a basket weaver and felter, Sarah Beck is a potter, Teena Marie Fancy is a mixed media artist , Gayle Bird creates wire wrapped jewelry, Katherine Scott designs with paper and me who works in fibers. 

Shari began the idea and invited us all to join her, quite a well rounded group and I think the show is going to be amazing!

Here are some quick pics of a couple of the things I am working on.  Neither is completed but I'll post       pics after we set up and hopefully others will allow me to share their work too. :)

This grouping will be placed in a nest and a Papa bird added with a few other bits.

This fine fellow is nearly done and is having a custom made personal perch made to call home.

I wish you all  were close enough to attend our opening night in a couple of weeks but hopefully those            close by will come along.
